The Hydro Grand Hotel, Timaru

Not so grand any more. I think it is a shame as it would be a great backpackers. But she's all boarded up and dilapidated and looks very unloved. Right above Caroline Bay which is a great attraction in the summer.

I remember staying here many years ago with my husband. We were told our room was right at the top, just keep going up until you can't go any further. We did. We ended up on the roof under the dome at the left corner of the hotel. Fully air conditioned, lovely view over the bay, but no windows, no bed, no anything! We had gone through a door that was supposed to be locked and wasn't. We did find our room eventually but I think we ended up down at reception again first.

  5. There have been so many old wonderful buildings that have just been left to ruin and it's always so sad! It's a lovely hotel. I would have loved staying on the roof if that had really been an option! Well, with no bathroom up there, that might have been a problem. :-)

  6. LOL I have a deep appreciation for explicit directions because I have found that one person's interpretation is never the same as another's. I bet it was a fabulous hotel in its day.

  7. My gosh, that was an experience you'll never forget. Easy to see that it used to be a beautiful building. A shame it has been let go.
