In 1861 Gabriel Read found gold near the Tuapeka River and triggered the  Otago, NZ gold rush.

We saw this at Lawrence when we were going to buy fruit, taking much the same route  as the goldminers and pioneers of old took. This is the way we travel up to our caravan.

Our first stop is at a little place called Lawrence, not  far from where Gabriel Read first discovered gold and started one of the biggest gold rushes in the southern hemisphere in the early 1860's. It lured men from all over the Australian and Californian goldfields.

I don't know but am guessing that the water cannon was used to sluice the hillsides when mining for gold.

A&T Burt were the manufaturers and were established in 1862. but sadly not still operating.

Holy Trinity, Lawrence

With the two earthquakes that hit the

Christchurch, New Zealand area in 2010/2011 

all public buildings throughout the country had to be re-assessed 

for future insurance purposes. 

This of course included all church buildings of all denominations.

Unfortunately a lot of the older churches in the country

didn't come up to standard and needed too much work for their parishes

 to bring them up to scratch.

This has resulted in a large number of small country parishes, 

and some inner city parishes as well, 

 losing the churches they have worshiped in for generations.

Holy Tinity Anglican church in Lawrence is one such church.

These are some snaps I took recently as we were passing through.

January 11th, 2015 at 8:30am 

presided over by Bishop Kelvin.

He describes the 1000 year old font belonging to 

the church and gives a brief history of it here.
