Taramakau bridge

The road/rail bridge over the Taramakau River
on the West Coast of the South Island, New Zealand.
I read somewhere recently that there is a possibility
of this bridge being closed, a shame as it is
one of the last road/rail bridges left on 'the coast'.

  1. I love covered bridges in Europe are not very common

  2. It sure looks narrow. So do cars & trains share the same bridge lane?

    1. Yes they do Tony, there are barriers at either end. Some first timers find it a bit tricky if they get caught on the rails but I've never heard of anyone getting into real difficulty.

  3. This bridge is shared by both road and rail traffic? I have never heard of this before. Sounds a bit dangerous. If New Zealand is anything like here the bridges are in awful shape. Diana, it's nice to have you back at Tuesday's Treasures, I hope to see you again.

  5. I am sure there are plenty of nervous drivers but what an experience! The bridge has to stay!

  6. I love those bridges, we don't see any of them in the north. I do hope there is a move to maintain it after it is closed to traffic. After all, it is part of our history.
