I don't know whether you would class these as fences
but they certainly are guide rails.
They keep the humans where they are supposed to be :)

Out walking one day and came across Islington, one of the original big homes on the Taieri. A hedge is a fence, yes, no? ...
It looks like it serves a good purpose--that looks to be a good slope behind that fence/rail.
